Thousands to Descend on West Bend for Geocaching Mega Event 8/12-13Published: August 3, 2016
It’s almost time for the 9th annual West Bend $1,000 Cache Ba$h!
Nearly 500 teams and almost 1,000 people from 27 states and three countries are already signed up for this free, family-friendly geocaching mega-event in West Bend, the Geocaching Capital of the MidwestTM. The Cache Ba$h will be held on August 12-13 in West Bend’s Regner Park with a cash raffle totaling $1,000 and tons of other great prizes!
Originating in 2008, it’s now estimated that each year, the thousands of West Bend $1,000 Cache Ba$h Cache Ba$h attendees bring in more than $400,000 to the city, staying in hotels, eating in restaurants and shopping the bustling downtown retail district.
The event draws all different demographics – from families with small children to teens and older couples. Whether your group is just delving into the world of geocaching, or you’re already a die-hard, you’re welcome at the Cache Ba$h.
This year’s theme is “Wild, Wild West Bend” with 66 new permanent caches established for the event, bringing West Bend’s total to more than 1,500 caches within a 10-mile radius of the city. In fact, the concentration of geocaches in West Bend is so high that Cache Ba$hers will have to venture to nearby cities in order to uncover all of this year’s new hides.
“This area is so beautiful, so scenic, that this is really an opportunity to introduce visitors to the amazing scenery we get to see on a daily basis here in the northern Kettle Moraine,” said Craig Farrell, director of the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce. “We know they’re going to love exploring Washington County.”
In addition, participants can hunt for three lab caches, only available during the event. Lab caches involve a specific experience that, when completed, yield a loggable Find Code. This year’s Cache Ba$h lab caches involve touring the Old Courthouse Museum, stargazing and a Wild West-themed photo op, complete with props. Cachers are encouraged to dress up in western garb throughout the weekend and can participate in Saturday’s costume contest with judging from the audience.
In honor of the “Wild, Wild West Bend” theme, a limited number of sheriff’s badge-shaped geocoins will also be available for purchase.
