Finding a geocache in the fall
West Bend is the Geocaching Capital of the Midwest, and it’s easy to see why—whenever you choose to visit.
Summer is a great time to visit West Bend, whether you’re attending fun events like Music on Main or West Bend Germanfest or exploring recreation options like the Eisenbahn State Trail or the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
But summer is a great time for geocaching, too, with pleasant temperatures and lots of daylight hours you can use to find any of the more than 1,600 caches within 10 miles of downtown. Stroll through West Bend’s pleasant downtown on a hunt for caches or hit up some of West Bend’s parks, which are also home to lots of hidden treasures.
The big geocaching event of the summer is the annual West Bend $1,000 Cache Ba$h, which draws hundreds of geocachers to the city every August. This family-friendly event is open to everyone, from beginners to experienced geocachers and includes raffles, giveaways, classes, and more.
Take a stroll through the changing colors as you launch your fall geocaching adventure. West Bend truly is a four-season geocaching destination, and you can prove your geocaching prowess by participating in the West Bend Four Seasons GeoTour.
Go on the hunt for 20 special caches that have been placed around the city. You’ll collect points for each uncovered cache as well as each meal you eat and night you spend at participating businesses in West Bend. Record your points on our special GeoTour passport (download it here or pick one up at the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce, N43 25.240 W088 10.897). Collect 25 points and you’ll receive a limited-edition West Bend Four Seasons GeoCoin, trackable on Geocaching.com.
Geocaching is a wonderful way to enjoy a seasonable winter day in West Bend. It might take a little more work to get to the caches, but the trip is rewarding, and it’s a great way to take in some stunning winter scenery in West Bend’s parks and natural areas.
Be sure to dress for the weather and bring the right supplies (such as a pencil to sign cache logs if your pen freezes up and extra batteries for your GPS) for your snowy excursion. See more winter geocaching tips here.
When the flowers start to bloom, it’s the perfect time to start your geocaching adventures in West Bend. Foliage that’s a little sparser can make some caches easier to find, and you’ll enjoy beautiful sights at places like Regner Park and along the Eisenbahn State Trail.
